NH Poetry: Cathedral of Nervous Horses

Jimmy Pappas recommends Cathedral of Nervous Horses: New & Selected Poems by Walter E. Butts (Hobblebush Books, 2012)

The late Walter Butts was the poet laureate of New Hampshire from 2009 to 20014. I selected one of his books for a personal reason: when I was retiring from teaching and thinking about finally writing poetry, he took time to encourage me after reading one of my poems in The Poets Touchstone. I thought of him as a man who truly lives by democratic principles and his poetry reflects that.

Jimmy Pappas is the Vice President of the Poetry Society of NH and the moderator of Zoom events for that group. He was a winner of the journal Rattle's Readers Choice Award, and his book Falling off the Empire State Building won Rattle's prestigious chapbook prize. Editor Tim Green interviewed Jimmy on YouTube in Rattlecast #34. Jimmy lives in Chichester NH and can be reached on Goodreads.

This post is part of our celebration of National Poetry Month 2021 for which I asked New Hampshire poets to recommend books of poetry by Granite State poets. These titles are generally available from local booksellers and may be held in public libraries as well.
