Book of the Week (2/1/2021)

An Enduring Love: The Civil War Diaries of Benjamin Franklin Pierce (14th New Hampshire Vol. Inf.) and his Wife Harriett Jane Goodwin Pierce by Sheila M. Cumberworth and Daniel V. Biles (Gettysburg, PA: Thomas Publications, 1995).

In the early 1950s, while remodeling their home, Joseph and Joanne Murnane discovered a set of seven diaries hidden inside a wall. Further examination revealed that the diaries had been written by two of their ancestors, Benjamin Franklin Pierce and his wife, Harriett, during the Civil War. They were kept in order to record the events of their lives while B.F. Pierce was serving in the 14th New Hampshire Infantry during the Civil War. Some forty years after the discovery of the diaries, the task was begun to organize and compile them into book form...The authors have combined the material in the diaries with traditional family history, archival records, and written sources, to create a picture of the lives of the Pierces during a time of great triumph and despair. -- Back cover.
