The Sabbathday River by Jean Hanff Korelitz (New York: Farrar, Straus and Giroux, 1999).

When Naomi Ruth finds a dead child is in the river just outside the Upper Valley town of Goddard, NH the news travels fast and the events that follow force Naomi to confront how little she really understands about her town, her friends, and herself. This was Jean Hanff Korelitz's second novel and it was nominated for the 2001 IMPAC Dublin award.
