Book of the Week #11

The Age of Jackson by Arthur M. Schlesinger, Jr. (Boston: Little, Brown & Company, 1945)

This book is generally considered to have made the reputation of historian Arthur M. Schlesinger, Jr. and as today, March 15th, is the birthday of Andrew Jackson it seems a good choice for this week. This book won Schlesinger the Pulitzer Prize for History in 1946. He also won a Pulitzer for Biography in 1966 for A Thousand Days. In the foreword to The Age of Jackson Schlesinger talks about the value of history:

"History can contribute nothing in the way of panaceas. But it can assist vitally in the formation of that sense of what is democratic, of what is in line with our republican traditions, which alone can save us."
