Book of the Week #32

Lit from Inside: 40 Years of Poetry from Alice James Books, edited by Anne Marie Macari and Carey Salerno; foreword by Maxine Kumin (Farmington, ME: Alice James Books, 2013)

Marie Harris recommended this book as part of our 2013 National Poetry Month Celebration and now that I have had a chance to look at it I want to recommend it as well. This anthology includes work by each author published by Alice James Books (AJB) through 2012. Among these are several New Hampshire poets including Nancy Lagomarsino, Elizabeth Knies, Cynthia Huntington, Marie Harris, Jane Kenyon, and Maxine Kumin.

"Alice James Books has been publishing poetry since 1973 and remains one of the few presses in the country that is run collectively. The cooperative selects manuscripts for publication primarily through regional and nationals annual competitions. Authors who win a Kinereth Gensler Award become active members of the cooperative board and participate in the editorial decisions of the press. The press, which historically has placed an emphasis on publishing women poets, was named for Alice James, sister of William and Henry, whose fine journal and gift for writing went unrecognized during her lifetime." --colophon of Lit from Inside
