NH Dublin Nominees for 2013

The NH Dublin Committee has selected its nominees for the 2013 IMPAC Dublin Literary Award. These are fictional works of high literary merit published in English during 2011. After reading and discussing many excellent books, the committee selected these titles for nomination:

Salvage the Bones, by Jesmyn Ward, is a powerful, beautifully written story about love. Love among siblings; the misplaces love of 15-year-old Esch (the narrator) for the father of her unborn child; the love of a man for his lost wife; and the all-consuming love between a largely abandoned boy and his dog.

The Night Circus, by Erin Morgenstern, is a great book! The writing was wonderful, the story was complex and interesting, the chacters were well-drawn, and what a circus!

The Rules of Civility, by Amor Towles, evokes NYC of  the 1930's with witty dialog, cigarettes and jazz clubs. When the heroine, Katy Kontent, is asked what her ambitions are she replies, "they're revolving." This could be said of most ot the characters whose ambitions lead to unusual and memorable lives.
