I read "painters in the room with soft swish-swish of their brushes" and immediately thought it might be a book about artists. But when I read again, I realized it's probably a woman getting her house painted (though walls aren't usually brush painted, so now I'm not so sure). Either way, hope you're enjoying it.

It is indeed referring to a woman who is having her house painted. It is an historical novel set in a time when brushes were typically used to paint walls. I can see how out of context that would raise a question!
