Book of the Week #13

Could Have Been Worse: True Stories, Embellishments, and Outright Lies by Rebecca Rule. (Concord, NH: Plaidswede Publishing, 2006)

"Later, Alan would claim the blowtorch had been Cornelius's suggestion, though Corn insisted he'd had doubts from the start."
To find out what happened read the title story from this new collection of stories by New Hampshire's own Rebecca Rule. Don't worry about the blowtorch, it could have been worse.

You don't have to claim any particular ethnic heritage, have seven generations in the ground, or even have been born in New England to be shaped by this rough, rocky landscape. "Yankee" is an attitude, built on the bone-deep optimism of that old, true saying, "Could have been worse." These stories explore this attitude and many others that contribute to that highly philosophical, peculiar, and often humorous, state of being called "living yankee."

This book is great. It has more straight humor than her book Best Revenge, but I'm glad for the smattering of serious stories toward the end. Rule is funny, but is also way more than a comedian. I hope alot more readers discover her, including some filmmaker somewhere who sees the movie possibilities here.
