Book of the Week #9

As New Hampshire braces for another snowstorm I have been putting together the Spring issue of Book Notes which includes an article about Celia Thaxter. In her honor I have chosen An Island Garden as the book for this week. Published in 1894 by Houghton, Mifflin & Co. this volume is Celia Thaxter's response to the friends who, summer after summer, asked her to tell them how she created her beautiful garden on Appledore Island. The book is illustrated by Childe Hassam and the author has "spared no smallest detail that seemed to me necessary, no suggestion that might prove helpful." It is the beautiful descriptions that make this a wonderful book for a New Hampshire winter when summer seems so far away:

"A thousand varied hues amid the play of fluttering leaves: Marigolds ablaze in vivid flame; purple Pansies, -- a myriad flowers, white, pink, blue, carmine, lavender, in waves of sweet color and perfume to the garden fence, where stand the sentinel Sunflowers and Hollyhocks, gorgeously arrayed and bending gently to the breeze; Sunflowers with broad faces that seem to reflect the glory of the day; the Hollyhocks, tall spikes of pale and deep pink, white, scarlet, yellow, maroon, and many hues. Over the sweet sea of flowers the butterflies go wavering on airy wings of white and gold, the bees hum in the Hollyhocks and the humming-birds glitter like jewels in the sun . . . "

LAL Semi-finalists have been selected!

Once again New Hampshire students have written some excellent essays about how a particular work of literature has changed the way they look at the world and over the next few days 35 of those students will be finding semi-finalist certificates and letters of congratulation in their mailboxes.
As soon as we get permission from the students (and their responsible adults) we will announce the names of the 2007 NH Letters About Literature semi-finalists. Over the next few weeks a panel of NH judges will select a NH winner for each of the three competition levels.

Carol lives in Windham, NH and is the author of many books on quilting including Easy Machine Paper Piecing which in 1999 was named by Quilter's Newsletter Magazine as one of the 30 most influential quilting books of the past 30 years.

Book of the Week #7

Intermittent Bliss: Reflections on a Long Love Affair by Willem Lange. (Hanover, N.H.: University Press of New England, 2003.)

I chose this week's book in honor of Valentine's Day.

It is a collection of essays by Willem Lange of Etna, NH. In his introduction Lange gives a wonderful explanation of the essential role of a spouse:

"We need someone to disagree with us, to take an opposing point of view, to tell us now and then that an idea we have is a crazy idea, before we begin to think it makes sense. We need a little conflict to keep us sharp and sane. A spouse -- usually our complement in almost every way -- is uniquely qualified
and positioned to supply that: to, say, "That's nuts!" before we actually are nuts."

You can read an excerpt from this delightful book about the reality of "living happily ever after" on the U.P.N.E. web site.

Book of the Week #6

Pancakes for Breakfast by Tomie dePaola (NY: Harcourt Brace Jovanovich, 1978.)

Have you ever had one of those days where you wake up with a clear plan for your day and then everything seems to conspire against you and make your simple plan a lot more complicated? If this is as familiar a scenario to you as it is to me then I suggest this charming picture book as the perfect reassurance that it will work out well in the end. Tomie dePaola is an author and illustrator who lives in New London, NH and has written or illustrated over 200 books.
